What is Quartz?

  • What is Quartz? Quartz is an abundant mineral on our planet. The name “Quartz” is also used to refer to many man-made products used for counter tops that are predominantly made up of the mineral quartz. Quartz, the mineral, by itself is not stone. Stone is made up of one or more minerals. When we talk about “Quartz”, also known as engineered stone or man-made stone, it is not solid quartz but is predominantly the natural mineral quartz(90% or more) mixed with additives such as resin, cement and color additives. Thus, it is made by man and therefore not natural. In general, quartz is typically stronger in flexibility, hardness, and less porous than natural stone, but not in all cases. Its resin and other binding agents will continue to harden over time and this eventually leads to loss of flexural strength over time. Because the resins and additives are not UVA stable, quartz should not be used outdoors. Heat can damage Quartz. Therefore, hot pots or pans should not be placed directly on the surface of any Quartz counter top. Quartz has a wide range of uses from counter-tops to vanities. It is scratch resistant, stain resistant and comes in a variety of colors made by many manufacturers. You’ll discover solid colors from bright to light and repeating patterns that offer varied color combinations and some with flecks of shimmer. There are many Quartz products on the market. At Lesher Natural Stone, Quartz, & Tile we started the business with all Natural Stone used for counter tops. But as the business grew and Quartz became a popular option, we chose to offer both options: Natural Stone and Quartz. We carry several Quartz products giving the customer a wide variety of options and colors all at one location.         The End.
